FLY
GALLERY
Originally tied by Bozeman’s Dave Corcoran,
this ultra simple emerger is highly effective in the presence of
smaller mayflies and midges. Though a perfect fit for spring creek
and tailwater fisheries, this skinny pattern produces excellent
results on the bigger rivers as well. Can be fished deep with shot
and an indicator or as a dropper under a dry. Top colors include:
copper, red, silver and brown.
To tie the Dave’s Emerger, start with the tail making sure
to attach the wooduck fibers towards the front of the hook and
wrapping back towards the bend. With practice one might attempt
to attach the wire and the tail at the same time - by doing so
one is ensured a perfectly symmetrical body without lumps which
often result from tying the materials in towards the rear of the
fly. |

The fish won’t mind the imperfections but we must impress
ourselves if nothing else. Once the tail and wire are attached,
wrap the wire forward and tie off in the thorax region. Next,
attach the woodduck wing, extending the tips almost to the
length of the tail. After attaching an wrapping the peacock
thorax, pull the woodduck over the thorax like a wingcase so
the tips are now pointed forward. Wrap over the fibers to the
hook eye then pull wing back, wrap over it to force it backwards
and make the head of the fly. Whip finish. It’s much easier than it sounds.
