Spent yesterday at Nelson’s Spring Creek in paradise valley. Was a vivid reminder of why so many of us have become fans of early season fishing. With off season rates in place, my angler’s rod fee was just $40 and we had the entire creek to ourselves. And because its March, we found the creek to not only be full of fish but willing to participate as well. We could fish 4x tippet and get away with flies I the #16-18 range. Midge larva and various Baetis emergers were the ticket. The breeze kept the dry fly opportunities limited though they would clearly exist on a calm day. In a month or so these same fish would almost demand 6x maybe even 7x tippet and more precision with fly selection and presentation. I don’t mind that myself, though its also pleasant to find these fish with their guard down. With the cranes, geese and ducks, a bit of green grass and comfortable temps to be added to our fishing it was truly a fantastic day. Hit the Yellowstone briefly this morning with my kids. Though windy the fish were active. Looking like a great week ahead.
