It’s been a big week around here. First, and most importantly, it’s cooled down. Instead of temps in the upper 90s it’s been in the high 70s to mid 80s. Water temps that were soaring have cooled dramatically and currently our river conditions are far better then they were. Water levels are low and will be apt to warm quickly if the big time heat return. Let’s cross our fingers and hope it doesn’t. Our efforts have been primary spent on the Yellowstone lately and fishing has been excellent.
Really it’s been a mixed bag out there. Aside from the typical array of nice rainbows and browns, we mustered a nice sucker this week. Took a #16 sparkle caddis pupa. Just today we landed perhaps the smallest fish I’ve seen caught in a fly. We measured the #18 hares ear nymph that the mighty beast inhaled and estimated the monsters length at just under 2″. I don’t think it was even a trout yet without a microscope it was hard to tell.
