It’s all coming together

Since early May we've been waiting for runoff to subside. And while the snowpack and rain that has caused it is welcomed, we've all been chomping at the bit, anxiously awaiting the moment that all of our area options become available. That time is now. While the Missouri continues to boast fantastic fishing, both the [...]

Pmds on the mo

The long awaited pale morning dun hatch is now in full swing on the Missouri and coupled w low flows, at least relative to a few weeks ago, conditions are just right for some fantastic dry fly opportunities whether blind casting riffles and banks or seeking out sight fishing flats. Have been tying an x-caddis, [...]

What runoff?

While word on the street is that everything is high and muddy, blown out and unfishable, there are not only plenty of options available but some really good ones if you know where to look. Spring creeks, tailwaters, lakes and ponds... Plenty to keep one entertained. Visited a remote spot today and found things just [...]

High water

Runoff is upon us. As it always does, warm weather has cut loose the mountain snowpack and most rivers are high and muddy. This year however, with an above average snowpack, the runoff is particularly impressive. While I've been hanging out in the clear waters of the dam regulated Missouri for the past three weeks, [...]

Nice beaver!

While fishing the Missouri today, this beaver swam right to the gunnel before hitting the road. Thought about trying to wrestle him but didn't. Fishing was good too. It's been great in fact. Saw caddis on the river for the first time today.

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter! With a bit of help from the Easter bunny, Charlie managed to land this fairly enormous rainbow this afternoon. It was fooled by a chocolate egg pattern #12.

Drowning worms

While the complexity of fly fishing technique, of entomology and the behavior of wild trout has a certain obvious allure there is also a certain attraction to the simple art of drowning worms. With ice out on local ponds comes a red hot sucker bite which the boys and I readily take advantage of each [...]

Spring conditions on Missouri

Spent the last two days on the Missouri - seemed like classic early April conditions. Lots of midges and while didn't spot many rising fish we did find that worms and virtually any pink or orange scud pattern, particularly the fire bead scud was deadly when dead drifted in water 4-6ft. The fish seem to [...]

Yellowstone heating up

As our daytime temps have gone up, likely bringing up the water temp as well, the Yellowstone has caught fire in the past few days. Midges have been prolific and present throughout the day providing us with feeding fish from ramp to ramp. Baetis have been scattered, would bet they will get get cranking in [...]
