30 below this morning in town – perfect weather for tying and thinking of warmer days that should arrive at some point within the next 6 months. Working on Spruce Moths today…a pattern that has become a summer staple on many of our local waters. This particular version is easy to tie and has proven enormously effective.
Spent Spruce Moth
Hook: Tiemco 100 #14
Thread: Tan 6/0
Body: Zelon Dubbing – Polar Bear
Underwing: Amber Zelon
Wing: Deer Hair
Simply dub a fuzzy body, add underwing (figure 8 the Zelon to attach then sweep back and tie down so wings angle backwards then trim at bend of hook) then complete by tying in deer hair wing as you would an elk hair caddis. I’ve included some photos below for reference on the tying steps.
If you are looking for a spruce moth pattern or a good summer attractor, this simple pattern is hard to beat.
