Have had some fantastic midge fishing in the past few days on the lower Madison and Yellowstone. The hatches have been strong in both sun and clouds….the trick has been getting out of the wind. Today on the Madison was a perfect example – when the wind was down in late morning we found rising fish. H&L Variants and the micro wulff cripple did the trick. When the wind picked up the surface activity was gone. Instantly. Good news is that at this time of year, it seems that fishing can still be productive regardless of conditions. Though a stiff tailwind made casting tough and a natural drift impossible we still did well with soft hackles midge patterns and San Juan worms. Calling for overcast skies, rain and light winds tomorrow… Should be perfect!
