I’m not exactly sure when the first day of fall officially occurs but one can easily sense that it can’t be too far away. The days have grown noticeably shorter, the nights much cooler (30s and 40s) and the leaves on our river bottom cottonwoods and willows are just starting to change.
As for the fishing….it’s in transition as well moving from our summer routine into the patterns of fall. Instead working dawn patrol to find active fishing when the water temps were lowest, we are now finding ourselves waiting for it to warm up a bit. And some bugs are back too. A variety of mayflies are starting to appear and a scattering of caddis as well. Good dry fly fishing is coming soon. It exists now though primarily on overcast days. Have been exploring the rivers around the area and finding solid results most everywhere….no question that the fishing is far more consistent now than it was just a few weeks ago…and it’s only going to get better from here on out to early November.
